Lib Dem 20mph Speed Victory Will Keep Children Safe

Everyone knows that speeding cars are a danger to our kids. And they make it hard for our senior citizens to get across the road safely. Your local Lib Dems have been fighting for years to get Kent County Council to introduce 20mph speed limits to cut accidents in residential areas where our children play.

After years of campaigning by your Liberal Democrat Councillors for Westgate Ward we've made a breakthrough on your behalf. Even though the Tory-run County Council (who are responsible for roads) will only provide enough cash for two schemes one will be on the estate!

London Road Estate will now have a 20mph speed limit and the work will start almost straight away!

"As a parent I am always really aware of the dangers that speeding cars pose to our kids," said Lib Dem FOCUS Team campaigner Sue Ashmore-Fish. "That’s why I am so happy that we have finally got the KCC to take steps to keep children on the estate safe."

"When a child is struck by a car travelling at 30mph it is almost certain there will be serious injury or fatality," added fellow LibDem and health expert Dr Christian Farthing. "We need to cut the speed people drive near areas where children play. At 20mph or less the odds are tipped in the child's favour and the risk of serious injury is more than halved!"

Arguing for the introduction of twenty mile per hour zones throughout residential areas veteran LibDem Highways campaigner John Purchese told the Highways Joint Board last week "My LibDem colleagues in Westgate Ward have been fighting for this for years. We knew that eventually the County Council would come round to our point of view. The second scheme is proposed for Wincheap Ward and I am confident local people will welcome these measures to make our streets safer for young and old alike!"
