For The First Time the New Council Intake will Represent Both Young & Old
With local elections on May 1st the Liberal Democrats have proved their popular appeal by announcing their intention to have a more balanced council. The Lib Dems, who are fielding 43 candidates in the local council elections, have a record number of women (at 41% of candidates - the highest percentage of any of the major parties) and young people standing for election - from all different walks of life.
"For years now the average age of the Council has been rising" said Council Leader Alex Perkins. "There have been just two of us in our thirties (both LibDem) and probably one forty-something. Everyone else has been pretty close to retirement age or retired already. The wisdom that has brought to the Council is undeniable but we need to have a balanced Council that is truly representative. That's why I am delighted by the number of younger people and very gifted female candidates who have come forward to stand as LibDems."
Dr Christian Farthing, Chris Took and Heather Scott are all in their twenties and have an excellent chance of being elected. Also standing in target seats where the LibDems are tipped to win are Sue Ashmore-Fish (36), Donna Dwight, Tina Kay-Bradley and the current Council leader Alex Perkins, all around forty or below.
"Being 39 and the youngest member of the Executive (as well as the second youngest member of the council) has made me realise that we need to add to our current wealth of experience by adding new blood," added Alex. "With existing members like John Purchese, Martin Vye, Denis Linfoot, Charlotte MacCaul and Mike Dixey this will give us a blend of youth and experience that will serve the council well!"
