Canterbury
leads the way on the Environment
By
Alex Perkins,
Liberal Democrat Canterbury City Council Leader
Under Liberal Democrat Leadership Canterbury City
Council has made huge steps forward in recycling.
In the recently published DEFRA figures we were the
most improved recyclers in the country and are coming
in ninth place overall across the nation. We are
also the top in Kent.
Since then we have brought in a new system of
alternate weekly collections, which will boost our
figures even higher.
In the last year we have fought and won a battle
with Sir Sandy Bruce Lockhart’s Kent County
Council to stop the building
of an incinerator on the edge of the city.
We have introduced a wide reaching and acclaimed
Green Travel Plan.
We have won Green Flag status for two of our main
parks.
We have brought in new policies to promote energy
efficiency in public, council-owned and privately
owned buildings.
We have carried out groundbreaking work in local
schools to help promote environmental protection
amongst the young.
We continue to have one of the most highly rated
Park and Ride schemes in the country.
We have championed operation CUBIT which works to
remove abandoned and untaxed vehicles from the roadside.
We also run environmentally friendly initiatives
on littering and dog fouling throughout the district.
We maintain and protect two World Heritage sites
within the district and dominate Development control
in the field of protection of the built environment
and our nationally acclaimed conservation unit.
We continue to campaign harder than any other council
in Kent for the Conservative-run County Council
to provide better roads roads, pavements, cycle routes
and public transport infrastructure.
We promote and sponsor walking buses for all junior
schools in the district.
IN SHORT - ENVIRONMENTAL ISUES ARE AT THE HEART
OF OUR THINKING AND OUR POLICIES. WE CONTINUE, AS
THE LIBERAL DEMOCRAT-LED AUTHORITY WITH THE HIGHEST
CPA SCORE OF ANY DISTRICT IN THE COUNTRY, TO
LEAD THE WAY IN ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION.
