Liberal Democrat & Labour Councillors form new administration
Liberal Democrat and Labour Councillors on Canterbury City Council have formed the new administation which took over control of the City Council on the 8th of May.
With full details now announced Liberal Democrats are celebrating as LibDem Leader Cllr Alex Perkins has become Leader of the Council with fellow LibDem Cllr Nick Eden-Green as Deputy.
Alex and Nick are joined by eight other City Councillors in what is known as the "Council Executive". This body, which consists of 5 LibDems and 5 Labour members is now responsible for the day-to-day running of the Council.
"I am absolutely delighted to have been chosen to lead the Council at this exciting and important time for the District" said the Liberal Democrat's new Council Leader Alex Perkins. "Canterbury is now bidding to become European Capital of Culture and we will make sure that everything is done to make our case. The Local Plan process is now at a key stage and as Liberal Democrats we are committed to making sure that there is full and effective public consultation. We will be spearheading the fight to SAVE KENT & CANTERBURY HOSPITAL - And there must be no let-up in our determination to make sure that all local services are of the highest standard and give value for money!"
"We have entered into a partnership with the Labour members on the local Council to make sure that the majority view within the City and the district is at the heart of local decision-making. Between us we number over 60% of the elected Councillors. We have acted on behalf of the majority of local voters - and we seek to ensure that their views, and not those of the minority Conservatives group - who sought to form a minority administration - are reflected in the policies of this Council!"
